my life as a farmer
Residing I became shocked by those big numbers. Now I manage them several times a year. I write checks that are almost $40,000 and cash checks which are over $50,000, even $100,000 easily time it right. How? I’m a farmer.
The business enterprise of farming is really amazing. We spent tens to thousands of dollars every year helping put our crops in your yard. We wonder regarding the rain, the wind, hope the hail and tornados stay away, we be worried about bug damage, extra weeds, and disease. Within the fall we get our $250,000 combines into the field next to the $100,000 tractors and $30,000 auger wagons and we start picking the crops. We either haul them directly to town or insert them in a huge grain bin on our farm. We hope there’s an adequate amount of a crop to cover the crops we presold at prices that (during the time) would ensure an income. If your prices climb or down after we’ve sold, it doesn’t matter. We’re bound to cures have.
We certainly have put aside over $150,000 in loans that need to be repaid with this year’s crop. We have equipment loans and grain bin loans and taxes and salaries that must be paid. And we take action all on under 1000 acres. We need to rent almost all of the ground since it costs over half a million dollars just to buy 160 acres of land. So 1/2 of everything we farm emerged towards the landlord. That also means he insures 1/2 of the expenses.
Farming is a good life style. It’s scary, fun, exciting, enriching and devastating sometimes. It gives great freedoms and ties one to the land. We are going to never move off from here. But I wouldn’t desire to.
