Alcoholism is a condition that is characterized by an abnormal craving for alcohol. Such individuals are also commonly known as alcoholics. In many places, alcoholism is a condition that is taken seriously. Because of their inability to control their drinking obsessions, the lives of alcoholics are negative affected. Alcoholics suffer job losses, problems in their relationships and the social stigma associated with such states. Many people have put forward suggestions on what might be the cause of alcoholism. A study of the psychological ,genetic and social factors is considered by many to hold the key and answer to alcoholism. Rehabilitation is currently the most common method of curing alcoholism.

In medical circles alcoholism is not a word that is commonly used. Instead shorter phrases are used to define the level of use of alcohol.Light drinking disorders are referred to as problem drinking or alcohol abuse whilst more severe cases are classified as Alcohol depenedence.

In many cases, the negative effects of Alcohol dependence is not sufficient enough to cause alcoholics to drop the habit. They are unable to stop drinking once they began and literally develop a physical dependence on alcohol. These individuals are found to develop severe withdrawal symptoms such as nausea, sweating and anxiety when they are unable to have a drink. Their body’s tolerance for alcohol also increases causing them to drink more.

It is reported that as much as 76 million people across the world suffer from alcohol dependence.

Recent insight in genetic studies have revealed that genes of an individual to play a role in the possibility of him developing alcohol dependence. In the cases of identical twins for example, the chances of the second party developing into an alcoholic when the first is shown to be one is found to be high. These findings have led to the growing call to treat and view the issue of alcoholism as a disease.

A decline in health is yet another side effect of alcohol dependence. For example, regular use of alcohol has been shown to cause damage to the heart muscle. The human liver also stands at risk from prolonged exposure to alcohol. Pregnant ladies who drink during their term increase the likelihood of their child developing fetal alcohol syndrome. In large enough quantities, drinking alcohol will result in death.
